Look up the race program on vrc.com.au over the weekend before the race, and allow plenty of time to get to your spot, because the crowds build through the afternoon.

Is Melbourne Cup Day a public holiday?

Yes. Melbourne Cup Day (Tuesday 3 November 2026) is a public holiday across all of Victoria, according to Business Victoria. The exception is a regional council that has arranged a different local holiday instead. Some non-metro councils do this every year.

Melbourne Cup 2026 tickets

When we checked the VRC’s Cup Day page on 30 October 2026, general ticketing was listed as sold out. Reserved tables, shared hospitality and dining packages were still shown. These change quickly, so check the VRC site for what’s left.

Buy only from the VRC or its listed partners. Resale tickets may be refused at the gate, and the VRC’s ticket terms set what each ticket includes.

Live music: the VRC lists Robbie Williams on Cup Day. He’ll perform in the Mounting Yard before the Cup, then for more than 75 minutes on The Elms Live Stage after the last race. The VRC says entry is free with a general admission ticket.

Rideshare, taxi and driving

Flemington has set rideshare drop-off and pick-up points (DiDi is the VRC’s official rideshare partner) and a main taxi rank. Public parking is limited at Melbourne Cup 2026. The VRC’s Getting to Flemington page shows the current options and maps.

What to wear: the Melbourne Cup 2026 dress code

The VRC says there are no dress regulations for general public ticket holders. It asks race-goers to dress suitably and to be comfortable. General public areas include the Front Lawn, The Park and The Hill Stand.

The Members Enclosure has its own dress regulations, and the VRC can refuse entry if they aren’t met. Corporate hospitality areas may also have rules, so check your ticket.

Each carnival day has a style theme. For Cup Day, the VRC’s theme is “bright, bold and beautiful”: colour, prints and statement hats. The official flower is the yellow rose.

Practical points from a long day outdoors: shoes you can stand in for hours, layers for the afternoon wind, and sun protection.

What you can bring, and what you can’t

  • Alcohol: you can’t bring alcohol through the turnstiles. The only exception is some members’ reserved car parks, and conditions apply. Drinks are sold on course.
  • Bag checks: security checks bags at entry.
  • Food: whether you can bring your own depends on the area your ticket covers. Read your ticket terms before you pack a picnic.
  • Leaving and coming back: allowed. Scan your ticket at the turnstiles as you leave.
